Families of Homicide Victims and Missing Persons Annual Meeting

August 29, 2015

Families of Homicide Victims and Missing Persons (FHVMP) held their annual meeting to address the staggering number of murders in America—over 16,000 annually. Speaking at the event, Richard Berrelez emphasized that hope and self-control are critical for stopping violence.

Despite personal hardships, he believes healing and hope remain for the families of victims.

Cadaver and Trailing Dogs: Training and Purpose

Richard Berrelez showcased the working abilities of Rocket, his family's American Bulldog, in a demonstration for News4 Denver. Though Rocket had never trailed before, he impressed with his skills.

He explained the difference between trailing, tracking, and cadaver search dogs:

  • Trailing/Tracking: Dogs lock onto ground disturbances or scent trails to locate live people.
  • Cadaver Searches: Dogs detect the scent of deceased individuals buried or submerged.

These dogs, specially trained and continuously practicing, play critical roles in law enforcement and victim recovery.

K9 Doc Holiday’s Tracking Success

September 13, 2013

K9 Doc Holiday, a bloodhound with the Fremont County Sheriff’s Office in Wyoming, tracked down a kidnapper who had abducted a 9-year-old girl. The dog’s skills were pivotal in securing a search warrant and rescuing the child. Doc’s handler shared their deep appreciation for Doc Holiday’s work and the crucial role of these bloodhounds in law enforcement.

Doc Holiday passed away on October 6, 2014.

The Bloodhound Project & Frontier Airlines

Since 1993, ALIE Foundation, Inc. has placed over 500 bloodhounds with law enforcement agencies across the country. Frontier Airlines, based in Denver, Colorado, has been instrumental in transporting these dogs from puppies to fully trained adults.

Over the years, transportation methods shifted from long drives to flights, with airlines welcoming the dogs in cabin—especially those under 8 weeks old. Occasionally, adult bloodhounds are still delivered by car for specialized police requests.

A Personal Note: A Life with Bloodhounds

Growing up in Frio County, Texas, Richard Berrelez dreamed of having a Mastiff, never imagining his life would revolve around bloodhounds instead.

Since then, he has dedicated himself to training and delivering nearly 500 bloodhounds to law enforcement across the country, honoring the memory of his granddaughter, Aleszandra Ariel “Alie” Berrelez.
